Why do I paint?
Because I feel like I’ll split a seam if I don’t!
Why watercolor?
I love the immediacy and flow. I love the brilliance of the pigments! I love the reflection of light that bounces off the paper through the pigment! I love how the colors move in and out of each other on wet or dry paper! I love that some pigments will settle in the paper surface to create added texture! I love making marks on paper with color!
How do I choose a subject?
Something speaks to me, a place I love, a magnetic lighting, an emotion that’s bursting, a story I need to tell. The visual language of shape, size, color, line, value, direction and texture are “words” I employ to start the tale. To keep the viewer with me, I choose from dominance, balance, contrast, harmony, repetition, alternation, gradation, proportion, scale, unity and variety to hold one’s interest. I leave a few things unsaid, so one can bring his or her own life experiences, to find personalized enjoyment. Whatever the motif I paint, you can be sure it has special meaning to me, and my hope is that it will strike a chord in you, too.
