 Born in Ottawa, Kansas, painting and drawing were special joys when I was young. My “when I grow up” dream was always to be an artist, but my parents had 6 children to raise, so an art school for me was out of the question. When I graduated from high school, I entered Kansas State Teachers’ College in Emporia, KS, for practical reasons. I was told a woman could make a living at teaching if she needed to. While there, I did sneak in a couple of art classes, and met another art student, whom I married without graduating. His work always seemed to take precedence, so I set that part of myself aside, to do the things society told me “women of the fifties” should do.
After two children , a divorce, remarriage and retirement, I found myself in Summit Co., CO, volunteering to do publicity for “Senior Winter Games at the Summit”, using my art skills for posters. I heard about some art classes at Colorado Mountain College in Breckenridge, and my art training resumed.
My goals are to continue exploring water media’s endless possibilities, to grow in technique and creativity. I don’t know who said it, but this newly-found “old saying” inspires me: “It’s never too late to be what you always should have been.”
